Request for comments re: ACSM certification name change

You may have recently received an email from ACSM notifying you that a public comment period has been opened regarding a proposal to change the title of ACSM Health Fitness Specialist (HFS) to ACSM Certified Exercise Physiologist (EP-C). ACSM does not have a plan for the general public or employers to be able to distinguish this renamed certification from the similarly appearing ACSM Clinical Exercise Specialist (CES) or Registered Clinical Exercise Physiologist (RCEP). CEPA is concerned that adopting such a similar title for a non-clinical certification without a plan to clearly differentiate from other credentials will cause confusion within the certified exercise professions. This could potentially lead to individuals without formal clinical training being hired into clinical positions and possibly reduce employment opportunities for candidates with ACSM clinical certifications.

CEPA is urging you to provide a comment to ACSM on this very important issue. In order to provide a comment you must send an email to certification@acsm.org to request a link.
